Espresso Machines -- Basic Budget Roundup

I spent a day researching entry level espresso machines, and I can't let the info go to waste. Before we get started, here's a cinemagraph I made that has nothing to do with espresso...

Well what do you want? I haven't bought my machine yet...

Listed below, in three monetary categories, are the machines I'd personally buy depending on the budget. The "Best Review" was the most helpful link I found when determining the best machine within a price range.

Under a Benji aka under $100
Machine: De'Longhi EC155
Best Review

Sub Five Hundy aka under $500
Machine: Saeco Aroma
Best Review

You Sure?  aka $500 plus
Machine: Rancilio Silvia
Best Review

When looking for an entry level machine, my top priority is "bang for your buck". My second requirement was a machine that I could learn with when it comes to pulling a shot as well as frothing milk. I don't know enough about espresso to have a third requirement...

I was originally set on the Rancilio because I got caught up in the (enjoyable) research and what the aficionados were saying on Coffee Geeks. I know little to nothing about making a decent shot of espresso, so I decided I wanted to learn cheaply. I'll spoil the surprise: Amazon was selling the De'Longhi EC155 "like new" for $67, so I jumped on that deal. If I get addicted enjoy it, I'll step up to a better machine.

With any of these price levels, you can do some basic modifications to improve the quality of espresso and froth, so do some mod research before you decide your budget. Personally, I'll be modding my De'Longhi (I'm willing to take the risk with this machine). If you are against altering your machine, I don't blame you.

*It should be duly noted that buying a decent grinder is half the battle for good espresso*

Hot Tub Shoot

Here's my third attempt at a Cinemagraph. I've finally figured out all the Photoshop intricacies which was half the battle. The other half was the 4 hours it took me to make this.

If I was being picky, I would fix the part where I reach for the camera, and delay that frame by double to make it a little more smooth. If I did that though, it would have made my friends mouth stay open for an awkwardly long time. I'll side with my friend... this time.

I used a combination of these tutorials:
